As the world navigates the challenges of transitioning towards sustainable energy sources, the potential of geothermal energy stands out as a promising solution. Recently, I had the opportunity to attend the 2024 Ontario Geothermal Association’s conference, where the discussion revolved around the theme of “The New Normal.”
Geothermal energy, often termed as the “hidden gem” of renewable energy, harnesses the Earth’s natural heat to generate power and provide heating and cooling solutions. Unlike solar or wind energy, geothermal energy is derived from the Earth’s core and is available 24/7, making it a reliable and constant source of power. It can be tapped into through various methods, including geothermal power plants, geothermal heat pumps, and direct-use applications.

In recent years, the conversation around geothermal energy has gained momentum, fueled by concerns over climate change and the need to transition towards sustainable energy sources. At the national scale, Canadian provinces are increasingly looking towards geothermal energy as a viable solution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance energy resilience, and promote local economic development. As the demand for clean energy solutions continues to grow, understanding the potential of geothermal energy and exploring strategies to integrate it into municipal planning becomes imperative.
One of the keynote speakers, William R. MacGowan, shed light on the intersection of geothermal energy and digitization in real estate. His emphasis on articulating the tangible benefits of geothermal energy in terms of capital returns underscores a crucial point for municipalities. In a landscape where fiscal responsibility is paramount, providing a clear and feasible return on investment (ROI) can incentivize decision-makers to embrace geothermal solutions. Moreover, MacGowan urged everyone to reconsider the concept of space, framing it as a tool for good living rather than a utility. This piece of advice provided a fresh perspective for municipalities seeking to integrate geothermal energy into urban planning and development projects. By viewing new developments in our communities through the lens of sustainability and comfort, local governments can leverage geothermal technology to advocate for healthier and more resilient communities.
The breakout session led by Wade Griffin on the “Opportunity for Geothermal in Indigenous Communities” offered valuable insights into the importance of inclusive and meaningful engagement. Griffin highlighted the necessity of moving beyond tokenistic approaches and instead fostering genuine relationships with Indigenous stakeholders. This emphasis on long-term relationship-building resonates deeply with municipal development strategies, where stakeholder engagement is vital for fostering trust and cooperation. Drawing from the Tu Deh-Ka geothermal project in Fort Nelson First Nation, Griffin emphasized the significance of cultural awareness and collaboration in achieving reconciliation. Municipalities can adopt this approach and prioritize community involvement, employee cultural sensitivity training, and establish mechanisms for ongoing dialogue and partnerships.
Another notable session by Martin Luymes focused on government relations and geothermal energy. Luymes highlighted the need to upskill the workforce to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving industry. This insight holds particular relevance for municipalities, where investing in workforce development can catalyze the adoption of geothermal technologies in the building sector. Furthermore, the discussion around building sector emissions underscores the urgency for municipalities to prioritize sustainable heating solutions. As a significant portion of emissions in our community arise from space and water heating, leveraging geothermal energy presents a tangible pathway toward decarbonization.
Local governments can pave the way towards a sustainable future by prioritizing stakeholder engagement, emphasizing the economic and environmental benefits of geothermal energy, and investing in workforce development. As we navigate the complexities of the energy transition, embracing geothermal energy is one of the most tangible options for building resilient and thriving communities across Canada.
