Timeline: 2022 onwards
The City of Barrie added two electric ice resurfacers to its fleet in 2022. These units were operational at the ice at East Bayfield Community Centre. The two ice-cleaning additions also had a major financial benefit to the city with a maintenance offset of $2,000 per year and energy-saving costs of $4,000 per year.
In 2025, the City transitioned all 10 ice resurfacers across City facilities to electric, which is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 70 tonnes annually. The City expects reduced maintenance costs of up to 40% (approximately $20,000).
