Timeline: 2023 onwards
In 2023, the City of Burlington installed new bicycle facilities on Plains Road from Spring Gardens Road to Waterdown Road. With the use of protected intersections and cycle tracks, the City will create an environment for safer cycling. There is now a paved bike path on the north side boulevard of Plains Road West and a protected on-road bike lane on the south side of Plains Road.
Protected bike intersections were also installed – a first of its kind in Burlington. These intersections are designed to increase physical separation from motor vehicles, improve sightlines, reduce the likelihood of highspeed vehicle turns and significantly reduce the distance and time during which cyclists are at higher risks of an accident with a vehicle.
As part of this project, a rain garden featuring 18 new trees and a variety of grasses and flowers was installed at the intersection of Howard Road and Plains Road West.
