Timeline: 2016 onwards.
In 2018, there were almost 7MW (megawatts) of installed solar capacity in Burlington. In 2023, based on data from Burlington Hydro, this increased to just under 9 MW.
In 2022, the City unveiled its new City View Park Pavilion. The City View Park Pavilion is the City’s first net carbon-neutral operating facility using all-electric systems and no fossil fuels. The building has occupancy-based controls and a 30kW net-metered solar array that will produce as much electricity as the building will use over the course of the year.
In 2024, solar panels were operational at Fire Station 5 in Kilbride offsetting slightly more than 100 per cent of the building’s electricity usage allowing for future electrification of the heating system.
In 2024, the City of Burlington introduced a one-year Solar Incentive Pilot Program by providing a grant for a Solar Panel Building Permit, saving homeowners almost $600.
Prior to the City of Burlington installing City owned solar panels on City buildings, third parties have leased space on three City buildings (Mountainside Recreation Centre; Roads, Parks and Forestry Maintenance building; and Transit Headquarters) for third party owned solar installations
