Timeline: 2021 onwards
London’s Rapid Transit infrastructure program is proceeding as planned.
London’s rapid transit system has been designed to help ease traffic flow along major corridors while adding streetscape elements and enhanced stations. Three rapid transit projects are currently underway in London, representing approximately $454 million of work, and have contributions of $167 million from the Federal and Provincial Governments.
The Downtown Loop is over 75% complete, the East London Leg is roughly 27% complete, and the Wellington Gateway segment is approximately 16% complete (as of April 2024). Work on each segment includes efficiency gains through coordinated infrastructure renewal for services requiring upgrading as they approach their end of service life.
2021 update:
The Downtown Loop is the first of London’s new rapid transit projects, including curbside bus-only lanes and enhanced rapid transit stops. Phase 1 of the Downtown Loop was built in 2021 to add a new bus-only lane on King Street between Ridout and Wellington Streets.
2022 update:
Construction of Phase 2 (Queens Avenue and Ridout Street) started in 2022, with planned carry-over work in 2023.
2023 update:
Phase 3 of the Downtown Loop construction began in April 2023 on Wellington Street between Queens Avenue and York Street.
The project will add new streetscape elements as well as transportation and transit improvements above ground while repairing and replacing aging sewers, water mains and other underground infrastructure.
