This project is undertaking low carbon energy and business planning options for various building archetypes. In collaboration with developers and municipalities in the GTHA, this project is advancing energy and business planning to explore the technologies and economics for developers to construct low carbon communities in a financially competitive manner. The project will also engage with municipalities, low carbon energy developers and electrical utilities to better understand the role they can play in supporting increased uptake of low carbon new developments. The results will be compiled into a Low Carbon Energy Planning in New Developments Primer and training program for municipal staff, enhancing their ability to work with developers and promote the uptake of more ambitious Green Standard metrics and phase out fossil fuel use in new developments. This project is managed by the Climate Action Partnership and funded by The Atmospheric Fund and Clean Air Council.
Project Outputs:
- Sample generic business cases associated with different building archetypes and energy systems based on real-world scenarios.
- Sharing of business case methodology, what variables significantly affect business cases across the different archetypes? How does a developer approach low carbon energy planning business case?
- What difference does streamlined access to the right of way (ROW) make to the business cases? What does streamlined access to the ROW look like?
- Low Carbon Energy Planning in New Developments Toolkit and Training Program for municipal staff.
Low Carbon Energy Planning 101
Each time new fossil fuel infrastructure is brought into a new development we move further away from our climate commitments and increase the risk of stranded assets. This webinar introduced the TAF funded Low Carbon Energy Planning in New Developments project and John Rathbone from Rathco Engineering to speak to the question: If not fossil fuels, then what opportunities exist to meet the energy needs of new residential developments, what are the pros and cons of different options, which make more sense than others for different development archetypes and why?
